M.D./M.S. in Epidemiology Dual Degree (GU Med Students)
Georgetown University medical students interested in research training may apply for our M.D./M.S. in Epidemiology dual degree program.
This option allows you to double-count 11 academic credits toward both degrees. After your third year of medical school, you will take a one-year leave of absence to complete the M.S. degree in two semesters. By earning both degrees within five years, you enhance your competitiveness for residency placements and future fellowship opportunities.
How to Apply
You are eligible for the M.D./M.S. dual degree program if you:
- Are currently a candidate for the medical degree in good standing at Georgetown University School of Medicine
- Are in your third year of the M.D. program
- Have the approval of the School of Medicine’s dean
- Have completed the USMLE Step I exam
To apply for the dual degree program, you must consult with the dean of the School of Medicine and the M.S. in Epidemiology program director (email epidemiology@georgetown.edu). Then, submit an online application to the M.S. program. The final deadline for the M.S. application is July 1 after your third year in the School of Medicine.
Degree Plan
During your first three years of your M.D. program, you’ll focus on completing the M.D. curriculum. In your fourth year, you will request a one-year leave of absence to complete the M.S. in Epidemiology curriculum.
You can apply 11 credits from the unrestricted elective requirement of your M.D. toward the M.S. in Epidemiology. You’ll be assigned an advisor at the beginning of your first semester in the M.S. program and begin developing your thesis project. You will complete core courses and choose a concentration, which will guide the electives you take.
